Module project "Mathematics as a universal style and way of thinking"

The module project "Mathematics as a universal style and way of thinking" is designed for outstanding students from grades 11 and 12 who are motivated to deepen and enrich their knowledge of mathematics aiming for successful application or further training in college. The idea of the project is through sufficient density of knowledge in mathematics to bring about a change in the quality of the participants' thinking. In studying the various topics in the school course very often the connection between interrelated and dependent claims is lost. This leads to distancing the students from some of the artificially imposed mandatory nature of certain conclusions. The content of the project covers the missing links in the fabric, which creates confidence in working with mathematical concepts and statements. Training on some of the topics is provided through appropriate interactive tests that are developed by the project author. The curriculum provides a density of knowledge in mathematics by building up the secondary school education. Essential topics are reviewed that allow the study of mathematics as a science, not as a discipline, which in turn lay the foundation for the study of natural sciences, engineering and the math at the university level. There is a prerequisite for further deepening depending on the interest. Indirectly leadership skills and desire for lifelong learning are nurtured.

AIMS AND TASKS:

  • Build a complete system of knowledge and skills that provide the mathematical methods of knowledge of reality through active cognitive activity
  • Mastery of oral and written mathematical speech with all its inherent qualities - simplicity, clarity, completeness and brevity. Formation of conscious discipline and organization, work habits and a sense of beauty
  • Construction of the apparatus of mathematical thinking and at the same time mastering the intended learning content - logical reasoning that is characteristic of deductive and inductive reasoning
  • Building skills for the creation and use of mathematical models for more accurate understanding of the objects and processes surrounding reality
  • Building skills for the separation of the mathematical part of the viewing area and its expression with mathematical tools. Performing mathematical processing of the information received and the interpretation of the results in the observed area

Implementing the objectives and tasks of the project guarantees successful performance entrance exam in mathematics. Density and depth of the knowledge achieved through active participation in this project is a prerequisite for high performance in entrance exams in mathematics at home and abroad, regardless of the professional orientation of the university and the form of the exam. The content of the modules in the project compiles educational content in mathematics at secondary school in our country and abroad and is the result of a thorough examination of the necessary basic knowledge in mathematics underlying the curricula of high schools with high ratings in Europe and worldwide. Includes 6 modules, 40 lessons each within 10 weeks.

First module: Numeric ranks
Consider the meaning of the term numerical number and characteristics of the numerical ranks. Reaches to the idea of the primacy of number lines in the surrounding world and their applicability. The course provides basic and in-depth knowledge of trigonometric functions and develop the application of knowledge of trigonometry as a powerful computing and proof device.

Module: General settings in stereometry
Examines closely and develops general issues in three-dimensional space. A model to explain the basic stereochemical situations. Dependencies upon a change in one or more parameters that describe a given situation are investigated.

Third module: Equations and Inequalities
Methods for solving rational, irrational, suggestive, logarithmic and trigonometric equations and inequalities are digested. The problems are solved by progressions leading to equations, inequalities and systems thereby to link to the first module - numeric ranks. Knowledge of progressions in processes and phenomena in the world around us is sought and applied.

Fourth module: Tasks with parameters
Improves skills to solve different tasks with parameters and parameterization of a particular class of problems. For this purpose, the knowledge of functions is deepened - limits, derivatives and their applications in physical and chemical problems, and analyzing statistical data. The idea of a functional method for solving some equations is analyzed.

Fifth module: planimetry
Upgrade is build and a dense planimetry knowledge is created. Systems of support tasks for basic plane figures is analyzed and the idea of their applicability is developed. Mainly it affects the application of trigonometry and vector unit in plane geometry - intrasubject relation to mathematics as a way of thinking.

Six pack: stereometry
The application of all the knowledge in mathematics when dealing with major stereochemically bodies is analyzed - polyhedrons, rotary units and combinations thereof. The skills for the application of polyhedron section with plane and extreme tasks stereometry is improved - basic knowledge of university education.

Deadline for applications: 10.03.2014
Test and evaluation of the entrance level: on Oct 4, 2014 at 9:30 at the “Center for young talents” - 4, “A. Sirekov” sq., Burgas
